The Black Phone Horror
Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective even without a continuation. Located in the late 70s in Denver, multiple child abductions has rendered the youth anxious. Yet the non-functional line on the wall repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators offering help, as the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, 10.50pm, on Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the battle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for materialism in this director's delightfully tacky true story of the disgraced televangelist and her felon spouse. Garfield plays the venal Jim, who declares initially, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple begin monetising the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, overdone appearance and insincerity, yet Chastain manages to depict the real-life figure with compassion. October 14th, early morning, the Film4 channel
