Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
